How to Do Well in Basketball Tryouts

Basketball tryouts can be nerve-racking, especially if you haven’t played for that team before and the only impression the coach has of you is in the tryouts itself. In a situation where a tryout is the only basis for a team selecting you, your performance during it matters a lot. If you are thinking of trying out either to TAC Force’s competitive teams or another team then this article is for you. We will be providing tips on how you can put your best foot forward during basketball tryouts.

Play to Your Strengths

The most important thing to keep in mind during tryouts is to play to your strengths. If for instance you’re someone who’s good at driving the ball but not the best at shooting, don’t try to show off your shooting during scrimmages. Instead, focus on what you do best so that coaches can see how you can contribute to the team.

Focus on The Little Things

You may think that coaches are only paying attention to how many baskets you score, but most coaches are paying attention to everything. They don’t just want to see how well you score, but whether you are willing to do the little things. They want somebody that’s going to run back on defence, have a positive attitude, make the right reads, hustle (etc). This is important not only for you to be able to contribute in games, but to contribute towards the success of the team in practices. The little things are something that good coaches will never leave unnoticed, and it’s how you can show you belong on the team.

Prepare and Be In Shape

You may be a great basketball player, but if you show up to practice out of shape and out of form then you won’t be able to show it. Prior to tryouts starting, you need to make sure you are in shape both from a physical standpoint and a basketball standpoint. During tryouts, you need to have the cardiovascular strength to be able to run up and down the court and last the length of the tryout. Your skills also need to be sharpened beforehand to make sure you’re playing the best you can. Don’t wait until the week before to get in shape. You need to start training for tryouts at least a couple of months beforehand.
